Checked Bag & Airline Fees Calculator
Example: Number of passengers: 3 · Round trip?: 1 · Checked bags per person (each way): 1 · Fee per checked bag: 35 $ · Carry-on fee (per person, each way): 0 $ · Seat selection (per person, each way): 15 $
| Total add-on fees | $300 |
| Fees per passenger | $100 |
| Checked-bag fees only | $210 |
Worked example
Three passengers on a round trip, each checking one bag at $35 and paying $15 for a seat, with no carry-on fee. Per direction, per passenger that is $50; times 3 passengers is $150 per direction, and doubled for the round trip is $300 in total add-on fees. Checked bags alone account for $210 of that. On a $99 base fare, these fees more than triple the real cost of flying.
Frequently asked questions
How can I avoid checked-bag fees?
Pack in a carry-on when the airline allows one free, use an airline credit card that waives the first checked bag, or reach elite status. On carriers that charge for carry-ons, weigh that fee against a checked bag before you book the fare.
Do fees really change which flight is cheapest?
Constantly. A basic-economy fare that looks cheapest can lose to a standard fare that bundles a bag and seat. Adding these fees to each fare before comparing is the only way to know the true price.
Are seat fees mandatory?
No. If you skip paid seat selection, most airlines assign seats free at check-in, though your group may be split up. Enter the seat fee only if sitting together or in a preferred seat matters to you.
Do bag fees differ internationally?
Yes. Many international fares include a checked bag that domestic fares do not, and allowances vary by route and cabin. Check your specific itinerary and set the fees accordingly rather than assuming.
